2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Houston County finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Houston County finished eighth in Class 2A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. No team at Houston County ever lost more games in a season than the ten they lost last year. The defense allowed a team record 451 points last season. The Lions have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Lions last playoff victory came during the 2004 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Houston County averaged scoring just 11.9 points a game. The Lions also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 45.1 points a game. The Lions would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 0-20 record. Since 2010, the Houston County football program has struggled with a record of 6-54. Over the past 25 seasons, Houston County has managed to compile a record of 123-144. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 1A and 225th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2009. The Lions are led by head coach Michael Atkins who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Houston County. The Lions have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Atkins. The Houston County Lions will play in Class 1A region two during the 2016 season. The Lions may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region two this year. The Lions enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 24 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Lions will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Houston County will be to simply win some games. The Lions open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Cottonwood on Friday, August 19 at L.F. Tillery Field. Last year the Cottonwood Bears finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 2A region two. The Bears closed out the regular season with a loss to Wicksburg by a score of 46-7. Houston County and Cottonwood have met a total of 84 times on the football field. The Lions have a 29-51-4 record against the Bears. They last met in 2015 with Cottonwood winning by a score of 46-19. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
